How to reduce screen time on iPhone
Start with one distraction: check your screen-time report, set an app limit and remove unnecessary notifications. If you keep ignoring the limit, also change the moment before you open the app. These steps start with free phone settings, with an optional tool for iPhone and Android afterwards.

Set up iPhone Screen Time and App Limits
01
Review your usage
Open Settings → Screen Time → See All App & Website Activity. Turn on App & Website Activity first if needed. Compare the day and week views. Separate necessary use, such as navigation or work, from the scrolling you actually want to reduce.
02
Set one App Limit
Go to Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit. Choose a category or an individual app and set a daily duration. Customize Days lets you vary the time by day. Check the option for blocking at the end of the limit: a reminder is not the same as a firm block.
03
Schedule Downtime
Under Screen Time → Downtime, set a period such as your evening. Check Always Allowed for essential apps. Whether apps are blocked during Downtime depends on your settings; review your exceptions before relying on the rule.
04
Reduce notifications
Under Settings → Notifications, disable unnecessary alerts and badges for individual apps. In Focus, choose allowed people and apps. Focus filters notifications; it does not automatically set an Instagram or TikTok time budget.
Why you can ignore an iPhone app limit
App Limits show you when the time has already been used. Depending on your Screen Time passcode and settings, you may be able to allow more time or change the limit. They are not a hard block in every configuration.
Repeatedly extending a limit can mean the rule does not fit your day, rather than that you lack discipline. Choose a realistic boundary and notice whether you open the app for a specific task or out of habit. A pause before the feed can complement a daily limit, not replace it.
The free Android alternative
01
Open Digital Wellbeing
Go to Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. Open the usage chart and select an app. Names and available features vary by device, so your phone may show a slightly different menu.
02
Set an app timer
Choose a daily app timer. Once it runs out, the app pauses until the timer resets; daily timers reset at midnight. You can delete a timer in settings. Focus mode can also pause selected apps and their notifications.
A manageable plan for less screen time
- Choose one distracting app rather than treating all screen use alike.
- Move it off your home screen and disable unnecessary notifications.
- Decide when you want to use it and what for before opening it.
- Include the website if you otherwise keep scrolling in your browser.
- After a week, compare your own usage and adjust the rule. One high-use day is not a verdict on your progress.
Where Think First fits
Think First is a native iPhone and Android app. Before a selected app, it shows a pause with a question and countdown. Afterwards, you decide whether to continue or put your phone down. This adds friction; it does not promise to eliminate a habit.
On iPhone, you select apps through Apple's Screen Time picker. On Android, an Accessibility Service that you explicitly enable detects the foreground app locally. Websites can also be included. The two platforms use different system features, so setup is not identical.
Three monitored apps, the pause, instant focus sessions and today's statistics are free. Hard Mode, daily limits, scheduled focus and unlimited apps are Premium features. Your reasons and statistics let you review your own patterns rather than compare yourself with invented benchmarks.
Statistics, settings and schedules stay on your device. Two server features are optional: friends and anonymous usage measurement. Both can be switched off. Measurement receives no IP address, location, device ID or names of the apps you protect.
A pause before your next app
Think First for iPhone and Android: monitor three apps for free. Premium costs €49.99 per year or €6.99 per month, each with a seven-day free trial. Lifetime is €89.99 once, with no subscription. Existing €2.99 monthly subscriptions keep their price.
Frequently asked questions
- How much screen time is too much?
- A single number of hours does not tell you whether use is a problem. Consider what you do on screen and whether it interferes with sleep, responsibilities or relationships. Start with your own baseline; this guide is not a medical diagnosis.
- Do I need to install another app?
- No. iPhone Screen Time and Digital Wellbeing on supported Android devices provide free limits. Think First is an optional addition if you want a deliberate pause before opening an app.
- Are Think First focus schedules and daily limits free?
- Instant focus sessions are free. Scheduled focus, daily limits and Hard Mode are Premium features. The free tier monitors three apps.
