How to stop scrolling on Instagram

Before you open Instagram, decide what you came to do: reply to a message, post something or deliberately browse the feed. Turn off unnecessary notifications and set a time limit. You do not need to delete your account to make your use more intentional.

Fewer triggers, more intentional visits

  1. 01

    Trim your notifications

Review Instagram's notification settings and its notifications in your phone settings. Keep the alerts you genuinely need. Suggested posts, likes and live alerts do not need to interrupt every day; menu names can change with app updates.

  2. 02

Choose what stays in your feed

Mute accounts whose posts you do not want to see. Use Not interested for unwanted recommendations where that option is available. These controls change content; they do not set a time limit or switch off Reels completely.

  3. 03

    Give chats an endpoint

If you came to answer a message, go directly to your chats. Decide which task will end the visit, then close the app. Leave browsing for a time you chose rather than continuing automatically.

  4. 04

    Move the icon

Remove Instagram from your home screen and disable its badges. It stays available without appearing every time you unlock your phone. Include instagram.com in your rule if you simply move the same scrolling to your browser.

Set an Instagram limit on iPhone or Android

On iPhone: Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit. Choose Instagram and a daily duration. Review your blocking settings and ways to allow extra time. Focus filters notifications but does not automatically limit time spent in Instagram.

On supported Android phones: Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls → usage chart → Instagram → App timer. The app pauses when time runs out. Timers can be changed or deleted in settings, and the exact interface depends on your device.

Can I block Instagram Reels separately?

Think First cannot hide only Reels inside the native Instagram app on iPhone. iOS does not provide that control to Think First. Instead, you can put a pause and suitable time rules around Instagram as a whole.

On Android, Think First has an optional short-video blocking setting called Ruhige Ansicht for Reels and Shorts. It uses the Accessibility Service you explicitly enable. This is an Android feature, not an iPhone feature; changes to the affected apps can influence detection.

Where Think First fits

Think First is a native iPhone and Android app. Before a selected app, it shows a pause with a question and countdown. Afterwards, you decide whether to continue or put your phone down. This adds friction; it does not promise to eliminate a habit.

On iPhone, you select apps through Apple's Screen Time picker. On Android, an Accessibility Service that you explicitly enable detects the foreground app locally. Websites can also be included. The two platforms use different system features, so setup is not identical.

Three monitored apps, the pause, instant focus sessions and today's statistics are free. Hard Mode, daily limits, scheduled focus and unlimited apps are Premium features. Your reasons and statistics let you review your own patterns rather than compare yourself with invented benchmarks.

Statistics, settings and schedules stay on your device. Two server features are optional: friends and anonymous usage measurement. Both can be switched off. Measurement receives no IP address, location, device ID or names of the apps you protect.

A pause before your next app

Think First for iPhone and Android: monitor three apps for free. Premium costs €49.99 per year or €6.99 per month, each with a seven-day free trial. Lifetime is €89.99 once, with no subscription. Existing €2.99 monthly subscriptions keep their price.

Frequently asked questions

Should I delete Instagram?
If you do not need the app, you can uninstall it. That is different from deleting your account. If you use it for messages or publishing, intentional visits and fewer triggers are another option.
Can a pause help me stop opening Instagram automatically?
It gives you a moment to check your purpose before entering the feed. Observe your own usage to see whether it helps. A pause does not guarantee less screen time or treat an addiction.
Can Think First switch off Reels on iPhone?
No, not separately inside Instagram. Think First can pause the whole app. Its optional Ruhige Ansicht short-video blocking is an Android-only feature.
